Solvents Use

Solvents use for cleaning

Austria: SAFECHEM Europe GmbH - PERO AG - Automobiltechnik Blau

SAFECHEM Europe GmbH (supplier) a company of the DOW Group producing chemicals for the cleaning of metal parts, and PERO AG, a manufacturer of cleaning machines, are involved in a Chemical Leasing project regarding the optimisation of the cleaning process. Automobiltechnik Blau, a manufacturer of re-fuelling systems and modules for the automobile industry, is involved in the pilot project, availing itself of the new metal parts cleaning solutions. The improved use of chemicals and machines achieves a solvent consumption more than 20 times lower than the traditional metal cleaning procedure, and energy consumption has been reduced by more than 40%.

Egypt:

Project title Cleaning equipment with hydrocarbon solvent
Partners
  • ChL service provider: Dr. Badawi Chemical Work
  • ChL service recipient: General Motors (GM) Egypt
  • Implementing agency: UNIDO-Egypt National Cleaner Production Center (ENCPC)
Industrial process Cleaning with hydrocarbon solvent in automotive industry
Chemicals used Hydrocarbon solvent
Service provided under ChL Dr. Badawi is supplying the hydrocarbon solvent and supervising and giving recommendations for the application of the solvent in the process of cleaning equipment at GM Egypt. Furthermore it takes back the solvent waste for recycling at its plant.
Benefits
  • Economical benefits:
    1. Cost reduction by 15% (saving of raw material with recycling)
    2. Reduction of solvent consumption from 1.5 L per vehicle to 0.85 L per vehicle
    3. Share liability and benefits
    4. Ensure long term business relationship based on long contract
    5. Saving the cost of getting rid from the solvent waste

  • Environmental benefits:
    1. Recycling of solvent waste and stop dumping (Closing the Loop)

  • Organisational and management benefits:
    1. More efficient cleaning process with hydrocarbon solvent by applying a procedure for cleaning by batch cleaning
    2. Enhancement of supply chain management and other environmental management systems
    3. Stop of using the hydrocarbon solvent in other purposes rather that cleaning of equipment (e.g. stop washing worker hands, cloths, etc.)
    4. Capacity building and awareness of operation staff

Solvents use for paint stripping

Austria: Tiefenbacher GmbH - Alfit AG

A further pilot project commissioned by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management (BMLFUW) relates to ChL in the field of paint stripping. In this case, the chemicals supplier is Tiefenbacher GmbH, a producer of special solvent-mixtures for paint stripping, and the customer Alfit AG, a manufacturer of drawer systems, which uses the solvent-mixtures to paint strip its hanging devices. Both were advised by the consulting company BEYER Umwelt + Kommunuikation (BUK). Before, Alfit AG bought the solvent-mixtures for its own use and took care of the disposal as well. In a ChL business model Tiefenbacher GmbH offers paint stripping as a service including the provision of chemicals and their disposal. Due to its profound knowledge on the solvent-mixtures it produces, Tiefenbacher GmbH can optimise the paint stripping process in a way that more than 50% of the solvents used can be recovered.

Solvents use for flexographic printing

Russia: ERG - Artflex

Artflex Ltd. purchased and installed in cooperation with ERG a machine for recycling of solvents used for cleaning the flexographic printing equipment from paint residues. The relating process enhancement affords the application of ChL business models in business relations between these companies (supply of the solvents by ERG with payment according to the amount of produced packages with flexographic printing) and provides the following environmental benefits:

  • Reduction of solvents consumption by more than 70%
  • Avoiding an expensive and environmentally adverse discharge of the used solvents to municipal waste processing enterprises

Solvents use

Mexico: Solvmex, Adydsa - various users

Adydsa produces roughly 4,000 tons of solvents per month. The company is interested in starting ChL projects with its clients.
