Vienna, 6 November 2018 - The Global Chemical Leasing Award Ceremony acknowledged best practices, innovative approaches and research related to Chemical Leasing.

In partnership with the Austrian Federal Ministry of Sustainability and Tourism (BMNT), the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB), the German Environment Agency (UBA), the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN), UNIDO brought together more than 150 participants from governments, institutions and enterprises as well as leading Chemical Leasing experts. The event was organized as part of the Green Chemistry Conference 2018 within the Trio Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) programme, “Smart and Sustainable Europe”, held during Austria’s EU Presidency.

During the ceremony, the winners from the fourth Global Chemical Leasing Award in the three categories (Case Study, Special Innovation, Research) were announced. The Award, which was launched in 2010, promotes the application of innovative business models and inspires companies and individuals around the globe to foster sustainability.

The sheer number of 91 applications received (54 "Case studies", 18 "Special innovation", 19 "Research") from 20 countries proves that Chemical Leasing is gaining momentum and is being applied in many companies worldwide and in different sectors.

Government representatives of Austria, Germany and Switzerland highlighted the importance of Chemical Leasing and the need to support policy dialogue, up-scaling and mainstreaming as well as establishing partnerships at the global level. To demonstrate their commitment to this goal, the governments of Austria, Germany and Switzerland signed the Declaration of Intent on Chemical Leasing in 2016. Having seen the results of Chemical Leasing in their countries, El Salvador, Sri Lanka and Serbia decided to join this endeavor and signed the Declaration on the occasion of the fourth Global Chemical Leasing Award.

Philippe Scholtès, Managing Director, Programme for Technical Cooperation, UNIDO stated that since 2005 UNIDO moved from a Chemical Leasing implementer to a promoter and facilitator enabling countries at global level to link economic and environmental benefits through thiscircular economy business model.

Paul Anastas, Founder of the 12 principles of Green Chemistry”, director of Yale University’s Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering, USA, delivered the keynote showing the need for a paradigm change and the contribution of innovative business models and Green Chemistry to sustainable industrial development.

Chemical Leasing is a service-orientated circular economy business model that can effectively address the different sustainability dimensions of chemical use. It aims to simultaneously create financial, environmental and human well-being. Chemical Leasing strives for a triple win situation for both partners involved as well as for the environment.
